Gas Sweetening Unit Modification, Nitrogen Package, and Raw Gas Compression & Dehydration Facilities – West Qurna-2 (Phase 2)
West Qurna 2, Iraq
SICIM S.p.A - LUKOIL
Project Overview
SICIM has been awarded the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for the modification and enhancement of gas treatment and handling infrastructure at the West Qurna-2 Field (Phase 2). The project is strategically structured around three core facilities to support optimized gas processing and integration with the existing network.
Facility 1: Gas Sweetening Unit Modification
This facility focuses on upgrading existing gas treatment systems to ensure higher operational efficiency and compliance with gas export specifications. The scope includes:
- Chilling Unit – for gas temperature control prior to processing.
- MDEA Unit – a gas sweetening system utilizing Methyl Diethanolamine (MDEA) for H₂S and CO₂
- TEG Unit – Tri ethylene Glycol-based gas dehydration system.
- Substation – to power and control facility operations.
Facility 2: Nitrogen Generation & Hold-Up Systems
Designed to support inert gas services and system pressurization needs, this facility comprises:
- Air Compressor – to supply feed air for nitrogen generation.
- Nitrogen Generation Package – producing high-purity nitrogen for operational use.
- Nitrogen Hold-Up Compressor Package – for nitrogen buffering and stabilization across the network.
- Integration includes tie-ins with the existing utility and process systems.
Facility 3: Raw Gas Compression and Dehydration
This facility is critical for boosting and conditioning raw gas from the field for further processing or export:
- Four-Stage Gas Compression – including air coolers for temperature regulation.
- Gas Dehydration Unit – to remove moisture content post-compression.
- Gas Metering System – for accurate flow monitoring and control.
- Substation & SIH (Station Interface Hub) – for centralized control and electrical distribution.
Tie-In Points
The project will interface with the existing production system through major tie-in points at:
- High Pressure (HP) Separators
- Medium Pressure (MP) Separators
- Low Pressure (LP) Separators
These connections ensure seamless integration with upstream production and downstream processing infrastructure.
